I began my nursing training in children's paediatric in Perth straight out of High School but found it wasn't for me. I left Princess Margaret Hospital and began work at the Technical Education Service in Perth assisting in the preparation of lessons for pupils studying extra-murally or being educated by correspondence. I also worked for a large newspaper in Perth assisting the Editor before leaving for NZ. Came to NZ, my first job was as a housemaid at Otematata for a season. I then worked as a nurse aid at Orokonui Hospital in Waitati for 12 months before marrying and having 3 children. I attended Otago University for 4 1/2years and obtained my law degree and was admitted to the Bar in 1990. The economy was at an all time low in 1990 and unemployment was very high. Friends needed a hand to run their tearooms on the West Coast so I went to live and work there for 5 years. I had 3 more children and helped my husband run the farm. I came to live in Oamaru in 1996. I studied and gained the Legal Executive qualifications in 2001. In 2004 I worked under the supervision of Mr Lester Dempster, a Licensed landbroker until 2008 when I became a registered conveyancing practitioner and Principal in my own right of Cullen Conveyancing Ltd when the Lawyers & Conveyancers Act 2008 came into force in 2008. This Act now gives the public a choice in all their property transactions and lawyers do not hold the monopoly any longer in property law. Selling and buying property now gives the public a choice as to who does their legal work involved in that sale or purchase of a business, residence, section or farm. This new profession "specialises" in property law which means our work is streamlined and we can afford to offer a very competitive price for our specialist service. Which begs the question: Why would you pay double for a general practitioner when you can have a "specialist" for cheaper! I am the Vice President of the New Zealand Society of Conveyancers and am the proud mother of 6 children and two grandchildren. I enjoy my work and find Oamaru a delightful town to work in and raise my children. |
